When a tooth is damaged, it is important to get it fixed quickly and effectively. Not only can a damaged tooth cause pain, it can continue to weaken a person’s overall oral health. Drs. Imam and Kahn of the Maine Center for Dental Medicine in Skowhegan have helped countless patients restore their tooth and their confidence with dental crown restorations. He helps patients understand the cost, benefits, and other considerations of this treatment.
A dental crown is a tooth cap that is custom made to fit over the entire tooth. Because it is created according to the dentist’s specifications it is a precise match in shape and color to the rest of the teeth. A crown can be used when a tooth is so badly decayed that a filling won’t be effective, in conjunction with root canals, or to fix a tooth that is damaged due to trauma to the mouth.
Drs. Imam and Kahn use CEREC to create crowns in the office, while the patient waits. This computer-aided design technology uses the dentist’s specifications to create a custom restoration the same day.
While an exact estimate can only be provided by the dentist, it’s important to understand that the value of fixing a damaged tooth is high. With treatment, a tooth can be restored. However, a damaged tooth that goes untreated can be troublesome. Many patients hope that their tooth pain will simply go away or they take over the counter pain medication to mask the discomfort. It’s important to note that the tooth cannot restore itself and decay will continue to grow and weaken the tooth, which could lead to tooth loss or other oral health care issues.
