Root canal therapy is a very common procedure that is performed on millions of people per year worldwide. While it can be a good option for saving an infected or severely compromised tooth, the complex tubule structure that spreads from the roots into other areas of the mouth can contribute to long-lasting infection that continues to cause damage over time. At the Maine Center for Dental Medicine in Skowhegan, Maine, we use a personalized biologic approach towards root canal therapy and work with patients on an individualized basis to determine whether root canal treatment is right for them or an alternative option such as extraction and replacement is a better choice.
The traditional method for performing root canal therapy involves removing all of the inner contents of the pulp chamber, including the nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues. The localized area is then sanitized, filled, and sealed off. In theory, this approach should work to eliminate the infection, but in reality, it is nearly impossible to disinfect the entire tubule structure with this basic endodontic treatment. This is where our approach at the Maine Center for Dental Medicine differs.
We are equipped with high-tech diagnostic imaging equipment that enables us to see the internal tooth structures in detail. Using this information to guide us, we then saturate the treatment area with ozone in both water and gas form to ensure that the network of tubules is completely treated. Ozone is composed of three oxygen atoms and occurs naturally in the earth’s atmosphere, but has also been used for many decades in both medical and dental applications as a natural disinfectant. Ozone therapy is:
While root canal therapy performed with ozone can be a good way to save a compromised tooth in some cases, it is not always the best choice. Our dentists perform a thorough evaluation of your teeth, underlying bone, and other oral structures to determine whether root canal therapy is likely to be successful. We will provide you with an honest evaluation and talk with you about the alternative options to restore your oral health and wellness so you can get back to your daily life.
