Located in Skowhegan, Maine, Drs. Imam and Khan of Maine Center for Dental Medicine put their patients’ health first. This dental team practices biological dentistry that first does no harm. The focus is on the health and wellness of the whole patient and understanding how the health of the oral cavity affects the rest of the body. With this understanding, materials and procedures used are carefully selected to ensure their safety. Laser dentistry treatments fall into this category, as lasers are precise, effective, and safe.
For patients with dental anxieties, laser treatments have brought a sense of relief. Advanced dental technologies now allow dentists to perform intricate procedures with less patient discomfort and downtime. Some procedures may be performed without the need for drills or needles, making visits to the dentist more pleasant.
Laser dentistry can be a precise, effective way to perform many dental procedures. Lasers are used to improve dental procedures as the dentist is able to control the power output and duration of exposure on the targeted tissue. This allows a specific area of focus without damaging the surrounding tissues.
Lasers use energy in the form of intense light to target and address dental issues. The energy is focused on the targeted problem. It can be used to remove bacteria, treat infections, clean the teeth and gums, or cut away the tissue. Lasers are faster, more efficient, and quieter than dental drills. There is often less discomfort and an easier recovery period than that with conventional dentistry. Many procedures can be performed without pain, anesthesia, or drilling.
For tooth decay, the laser removes the decay from a tooth. The surrounding structure is then prepared for the filling. For periodontal therapies, lasers reshape the gums and remove bacteria. Excess gum or soft tissue can be safely and efficiently removed. Biopsies can be performed, and lesions can be removed from the mouth.
Laser technology has brought about advancements in the medical and dental fields. In the 1990s, dentists began using lasers for dental procedures. Treatments can now be performed safely and effectively. Lasers reduce anxieties caused by dental drills, as they eliminate the sound and smell of drills. They are faster and more effective than drills. Less discomfort, downtime, or recovery time is needed after laser treatments. Wounds heal quickly, and the tissues can be regenerated. Patients have less bleeding, less swelling, and faster healing. More of the healthy tooth can be maintained with laser treatments for cavity removal.
With laser technology, the need for scalpels, drills, and invasive surgical procedures is eliminated or reduced. Lasers use a concentrated beam of light that is trained on the treatment site. The energy vaporizes the damaged or infected areas while clotting exposed blood vessels to inhibit blood loss and to promote healing. Bacterial infections are minimized, as the laser sterilizes the treatment site. In addition to avoiding the need for surgery, laser treatments have many advantages over traditional treatments. These benefits include the following:
