There are many times in which Skowhegan, Maine area patients may need dental work. In some instances, patients may require treatments such as root canal therapy. With our advanced dental office at the Maine Center for Dental Medicine, patients can work with Drs. Mohammed Imam and Shafiulla Khan to discuss the advantages of not only providing root canal therapy to save a natural tooth but to complete the treatment in conjunction with ozone therapy.
Ozone therapy is being used today as a powerful tool in the treatment of infection and the elimination of bacteria in the oral cavity. Therapy with this gas, which is comprised of three oxygen atoms, can be integrated into many dental procedures. In addition to root canal therapy, dental ozone therapy may be integrated into other treatments such as periodontal therapy and deep dental cleanings.
Ozone therapy in the dental office has several benefits. Ozone therapy is:
First, patients must understand the advantages of undergoing root canal therapy. Root canal therapy is a procedure that is performed when the inner portion of the tooth is infected or diseased. The dentist performs this therapy by accessing the dental pulp of the tooth in the canals, which contain the nerves, blood supply, and tissues. These tissues are removed, the inner canals are then treated with ozone gas to destroy bacteria and infection, and the tooth is then filled with gutta-percha. After the area has been treated, composite resin may be used to seal the tooth, and a dental crown may be made to cover the tooth. This strengthens the tooth while protecting it from damage, as root canal therapy may weaken the tooth. When the tooth is treated with ozone gasses, it can reduce the risk of infection recurring and allows the patients to maintain the tooth in the smile. By performing root canal therapy, or “endodontic therapy,” the patient avoids the need to have the tooth extracted and replaced with a dental implant, dental bridge, or partial denture. Whenever possible, our dental team believes in maintaining the natural tooth as long as possible, and root canal therapy offers this opportunity.
